Executive Summary
Gum arabic: Importation of goods from Sudan blocked beginning Nov. 4 under an Executive Order signed by President Clinton Nov. 3. The government "may consider licensing" the "importation of certain products unavailable from other sources, such as gum arabic," the order states. The order follows two stalled attempts at cutting off trade with Sudan through legislation ("The Tan Sheet" Oct. 27, p. 12). It is highly unlikely that either the State Department reauthorization act (HR 1757) or the Freedom from Religious Persecution act (HR 2431) will see further action before the congressional recess.
