UNLUBRICATED CONDOMS LINKED TO INCREASED FIRST UTI RISK in a study by Betsy Foxman, PhD, et al., published in the November issue of Epidemiology. The 241-subject study was designed to separate the effects of condoms, lubricated condoms and spermicides on the risk of acquiring first-time urinary tract infections among women. The results show condom use increased the risk of first-time UTI, but lubricated condoms "largely neutralized" the effect. The researchers are affiliated with the Universities of Michigan and Wisconsin and the Lewin Group in San Francisco. The study was supported by the National Institute of Digestive & Kidney Diseases.
