INFANT FORMULA GRAS NOTIFICATION WOULD BE "PREMARKET APPROVAL," IFC MAINTAINS in comments recently submitted to FDA. The Infant Formula Council believes FDA's proposed rule to modify the Infant Formula Act by requiring that each infant formula ingredient be an approved food ingredient, authorized by prior sanction from the agency, or Generally Recognized as Safe for its intended use "constitutes premarket approval of the ingredients used in infant formulas, i.e., such ingredients must be demonstrated safe to the agency's satisfaction that an ingredient is GRAS for its intended use," the comments state.
