Executive Summary
SUPPLEMENT SAFETY, CLAIM SUBSTANTIATION ADVICE WITHIN COMMISSION PURVIEW, President's Commission on Dietary Supplement Labels member Margaret Gilhooley, Seton Hall University School of Law, maintained at an Aug. 14 meeting in Reston, Va. The commission held a two-day meeting Aug. 14 and 15 to discuss the over 240 comments received on its draft report on supplement labeling and claims issued June 24 ("The Tan Sheet" June 30, pp. 17-25). The commission also discussed changes it will make in the final report, expected in the fall. One comment said the commission "exceeded its statutory authority" by addressing additional issues in the report such as safety, claim substantiation, statements of nutritional support, consumer research and research funding, Gilhooley noted.
