Supplement commission backs off from consumer summaries in notification letters.

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

SUPPLEMENT COMMISSION BACKS OFF FROM PROPOSED CONSUMER SUMMARIES accompanying notification letters for structure/function claims submitted to FDA, the group decided at an Aug. 14-15 meeting in Reston, Va. The commission's June 24 draft report on supplement labeling called for supplement manufacturers to make consumer summaries of claims substantiation and safety information publicly available for each product sold bearing a structure/function claim ("The Tan Sheet" June 30, p. 19). The Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act requires companies to submit a notification letter to FDA within 30 days of marketing a dietary supplement indicating the structure/function claims being made for the product.
