CHOLESTEROL STRUCTURE/FUNCTION CLAIMS POSSIBLE, COMMISSION MEMBERS say in a June 24 draft report issued by the President's Commission on Dietary Supplement Labels. Established by the Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act of 1994, the commission has been evaluating the regulation of label claims and statements for dietary supplements since early 1996. The draft report makes a number of recommendations as to how dietary supplement companies can better convey information to consumers about the products. Public comments on the draft are due Aug. 4, and the commission intends to submit a final report to President Clinton, Congress and HHS in late August or early September.
