BETA-CAROTENE LINK TO "SIGNIFICANTLY" INCREASED FATAL HEART DISEASE is reviewed in a study by Janne Rapola, MD, National Public Health Institute, Helsinki, Finland, et al., published in the June 14 issue of The Lancet. The study involved 1,862 men enrolled in the Alpha-tocopherol and Beta-carotene Cancer Prevention Study who had a previous myocardial infarction. The subjects received dietary supplements of alpha-tocopherol (50 mg/day), beta-carotene (20 mg/day), both or placebo.
