Executive Summary
HIGH-DOSE BETA CAROTENE SUPPLEMENTATION SHOULD BE AVOIDED BY SMOKERS, researchers from the Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta Carotene Cancer Prevention (ATBC) Study reported in the Nov. 6 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The Finnish study, designed to test the assumption that beta carotene and vitamin E supplementation would reduce the incidence of lung cancer in smokers, found that the opposite was true: smokers taking beta carotene had a higher incidence of lung cancer than those who did not smoke.
