McNEIL DISCONTINUING ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION PAIN RELIEVERS LINE after the products "failed to achieve sales objectives," the J&J unit said. McNeil announced on Sept. 26 that it is replacing its former arrangement with the Arthritis Foundation -- in which it donated about $1 mil. a year to the foundation based on royalties on Arthritis Foundation product sales -- with an outright contribution of $1.3 mil. a year in 1997, 1998 and 1999. The funds are to be used for arthritis education and service programs.
