Calcium and osteoporosis: "Calcium is beneficial to bone mineral density alone and in conjunction with treatments for osteoporosis" including conjugated estrogen therapy and nasal salmon calcitonin, according to a meta-analysis of 39 trials sponsored by the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF). Presented at the Standing Committee on Dietary Reference Intakes' June 9-10 meeting on RDA revision, the review looked at the effect of calcium supplementation on bone mineral density, a predictor of fracture risk.
