Executive Summary
NICOTINE REPLACEMENT MAY BE "ESSENTIAL" FOR DEPRESSED MALE SMOKERS who are trying to quit smoking, Paul Cinciripini, PhD, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, said at a June 21 National Cancer Institute/American Society of Clinical Oncology symposium on tobacco addiction in Bethesda, Md. According to findings from his recently-completed study of smoking cessation, "long-term abstention is unlikely" among male smokers with depression without use of the nicotine patch, Cinciripini said.
