Executive Summary
VITAMIN A SUPPLEMENTATION ABOVE 8,000 IUs/DAY SHOULD BE AVOIDED by pregnant women, Godfrey Oakley, MD, and David Erickson, DDS/PhD, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend in an editorial in the Nov. 23 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. Commenting on a study in the same issue that links high levels of pre-formed vitamin A to birth defects, the editorial writers noted that "no more than the U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of vitamin A for pregnant women (8,000 IU) is beneficial."
