FOLIC ACID INCREASED INTAKE COULD PREVENT 13,500-50,000 DEATHS from vascular disease annually, Carol Boushey, PhD, MPH, RD, et al., suggested in a review article published in the Oct. 4 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. The article, entitled "A Quantitative Assessment of Plasma Homocysteine as a Risk Factor for Vascular Disease: Probable Benefits of Increasing Folic Acid Intakes," reviewed 27 studies on the relationship between homocysteine and arteriosclerosis and 11 studies on the effects of folic acid on homocysteine.
