CHINESE SHO-SAIKO-TO "HELPED TO PREVENT" LIVER CANCER, researchers from Osaka City University Medical School, Osaka City General Hospital, Sumiyoshi Municipal Hospital, Kobe Asahi Hospital and the Institute of Public Health in Tokyo report in the Sept. 1 issue of Cancer. Hiroko Oka et al. concluded that the Chinese herbal remedy Sho-saiko-to (TJ-9) "helped to prevent the development of hepatocellular carcinomas in patients with cirrhosis, particularly in patients without [hepatitis B] antigen." Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common cancer, often found in patients with underlying cirrhosis.
