NLEA CHANGES TO PROTECT "PROPRIETARY" DATA SUPPORTING HEALTH CLAIMS may be necessary to encourage companies to generate such information, FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition Director Fred Shank, PhD, suggested at a June 14 conference on folate and health claims in Washington, D.C. Shank noted that industry may be more interested in generating efficacy and other data to support health claims under the Nutrition Labeling & Education Act if the investment could be protected and "to do that there really needs to be a change in the legislation."
