Analgesics and ESRD study results may underestimate risk, researchers write in NEJM.

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

ANALGESICS AND ESRD: POSSIBLE MISCLASSIFICATION OF ANALGESICS USAGE AND DOSAGE by participants in a study published in the Dec. 22 New England Journal of Medicine "would bias the odds ratio towards...absence of association," Thomas Perneger, MD/PhD, et al. said in response to a letter in the June 1 NEJM that pointed out the potential for patient confusion. "This arouses concern that, in reality, the risk of [end-stage renal disease] associated with the use of analgesic drugs is higher than we found," Perneger et al. stated.
