SAFEWAY HAS IDENTIFIED 4,000 CANS OF COUNTERFEIT SIMILAC powder infant formula with iron in 50 of its Northern California stores following consumer reports of one-pound cans that resemble Similac. Abbott's Ross Labs subsidiary, which manufactures and sells Similac infant formula, notified FDA and Safeway that consumers had contacted the company with information about infant formula that differed from its usual appearance. Safeway said it removed all of the counterfeit product from its shelves by Feb. 1.
