FOLATE LINK TO REDUCED STROKE RISK SHOWN in a study published in the Feb. 2 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine that analyzed the relationship of folic acid intake with elevated plasma levels of homocysteine among subjects with varying degrees of carotid-artery stenosis. Conducted by Jacob Selhub, PhD, U.S. Department of Agriculture Human Nutrition Center on Aging at Tufts University, et al., the study found that both low folic acid intake and high homocysteine levels increase the risk of carotid-artery stenosis, a primary indicator of stroke risk.
