Folic acid and B12: Study in the Jan. 21 issue of the Lancet suggests that "the most effective periconceptional prophylaxis to prevent neural tube defects may require B12 as well as folic acid." Study investigators tested the levels of homocysteine, methylmalonic acid, plasma folate, red-cell folate and B12 in blood samples of 404 pregnant women and found that mothers of children with birth defects (81) "had significantly higher homocysteine values than did B12-matched controls"...
