OTC ACETAMINOPHEN, NSAIDs RECOMMENDED AS FIRST-LINE THERAPY FOR LOW BACK PAIN in clinical practice guidelines developed by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research. Acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin and prescription NSAIDs, are "reasonably safe" and "acceptable" medications for short-term treatment of back pain, the guidelines conclude.
