Executive Summary
FDA publishes in the Aug. 4 Federal Register a request for comments about "whether and how the agency should develop regulations that would establish requirements for a new comprehensive food safety assurance" program based on hazard analysis critical control points. In a separate Aug. 4 notice, the agency announced that it will conduct a pilot program in which volunteers from the food industry will use a HACCP system; the pilot program is intended to assist FDA in deciding whether to implement a HACCP system for food manufacturers. FDAers have previously indicated that dietary supplements would not be a major target of the HACCP program ("The Tan Sheet" May 16, p. 25)
