Oral rehydration therapy

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

HHS' Agency for Health Care Policy and Research awards $500,000 grant to Trustees of Health and Hospitals of the City of Boston, Inc. for a three-year project to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of homemade cereal-based oral rehydration solutions for the treatment of diarrheal dehydration in infants and young children aged two-to-24 months. The researchers will compare outcomes for patients treated with a commercial product with outcomes from patients receiving a homemade preparation. AHCPR noted that "although commercial products are widely available, their cost may serve as an economic barrier to use by poor families." The study is one of six second-generation clinical outcome studies, called PORTs (Patient Outcomes Research Teams), sponsored by AHCPR
