FIBER SUPPLEMENT CLINICAL TRIAL SHOWS REDUCED CHOLESTEROL LEVELS

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

FIBER SUPPLEMENT CLINICAL TRIAL SHOWS REDUCED CHOLESTEROL LEVELS in patients with "mild to moderate hypercholesterolemia," according to a study published in the May issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Conducted by Donald Hunninghake, MD, University of Minnesota, et al., the study found that patients treated for 15 weeks with either 10 or 20 g daily of the fiber supplement had "significantly reduced" levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol compared to patients receiving a placebo. The fiber supplement group also showed a reduced ratio of LDL to high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.
