CALCIUM RDAs WOULD BE RE-EVALUATED BY FDA's FOOD ADVISORY COMMITTEE

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

CALCIUM RDAs WOULD BE RE-EVALUATED BY FDA's FOOD ADVISORY COMMITTEE under a bill introduced by Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) on April 21 ("The Tan Sheet" May 2, In Brief). The Osteoporosis Risk Reduction Act of 1994 (HR 4284) would require FDA to direct its Food Advisory Committee to "review the available data regarding the relationship between dietary calcium intake, bone mineral density and onset of osteoporosis" and determine whether the Recommended Daily Allowances for calcium "appropriately reflect" that relationship.
