Executive Summary
FDA DIETARY FIBER HEALTH CLAIMS CONFERENCE SET FOR MAY 12-13 will address "the criteria for determining whether significant scientific agreement" on the relationship between dietary fiber and cancer or heart disease exists, FDA announced in an April 7 Federal Register notice. FDA said it plans to divide the meeting into "four major parts" -- an opening and overview of dietary fiber, a discussion of dietary fiber and heart disease, a discussion on dietary fiber and cancer, and a discussion of the criteria for determining significant scientific agreement on dietary fiber health claims. A similar public conference took place in November to address antioxidant health claims ("The Tan Sheet" Nov. 8, 1993, pp. 15-21).
