Executive Summary
Study in the Jan. 6 New England Journal of Medicine finds that the "common cold is an illness with broader anatomical involvement in the upper airway than previously recognized," including "occlusion and abnormalities in the sinus cavities." Jack Gwaltney, MD, University of Virginia, et al., posited that the findings "improve our understanding of the pathogenesis of both the common cold and acute bacterial sinusitis and may even help us find better treatment for the cold." Supported by P&G, the study also indicated that colds are actually viral rhinosinusitis because sinus abnormalities were reversed without antimicrobial treatment
