Executive Summary
FDA is expecting "imminent publication" of the folic acid proposals as well as a document "reopening" the comment period for "health claim topics which were not approved in the January publication" of the Nutrition Labeling & Education Act regulations, FDA's Office of Special Nutritionals Director Elizabeth Yetley, PhD, tells the Council for Responsible Nutrition annual conference on Sept. 23. The health claim topics include: zinc and immune function in the elderly; folic acid and neural tube defects; omega-3 fatty acids and coronary heart disease; antioxidants and cancer; and dietary fiber and cancer/cardiovascular disease. Yetley also said that a public conference to discuss antioxidant health claims is slated for Nov. 1-3 in Washington, D.C. ("The Tan Sheet" Sept. 20, In Brief), and that a similar conference on dietary fiber and cancer/heart disease will be held "sometime after the first of the calendar year".
