Executive Summary
Recommends in a folic acid policy statement that FDA "expeditiously devise and implement a program, such as fortification, that will prevent" neural tube defects. Such a program, AAP advised, should support a surveillance system to track the "effectiveness and/or adverse outcomes" of fortification. FDA is expected within the next month to issue a proposal allowing folic acid health claims as well as fortification of the food supply ("The Tan Sheet" Aug. 16, p. 3).
