Oral contraceptive labeling

Executive Summary
FDA approves labeling changes recommended by FDA's Fertility & Maternal Health Advisory Committee that the physical examination "may be deferred until after initiation of oral contraceptives if requested by the woman and judged appropriate by the clinician." Requiring a physical exam prior to obtaining an OC prescription has long been an obstacle to switching the products to over-the- counter status, an idea that is still being considered by FDA ("The Tan Sheet" May 24, p. 5).
