Executive Summary
S 1179 passes Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee Aug. 3 with no amendments. Introduced by Sen. Richard Bryan (D-Nev.), the bill would permanently ban the use by the Federal Trade Commission of an "unfairness" standard in advertising rulemaking ("The Tan Sheet" July 5, p. 15). The bill's House counterpart, which was passed by the full House June 21, has no restrictions on use of the unfairness standard. A Senate floor vote on S 1179 is pending.
