American Herbal Products Association adds comfrey to its "restricted use" list. AHPA urged manufacturers who use the herbal ingredient to add a warning label that says that the product is intended for "external use only." Labeling also should caution against use by nursing mothers and against application to abraded skin. AHPA made its decision based on an Herb Research Foundation safety review of comfrey, which has been associated with liver toxicity in lab animals
