Executive Summary
77% of 173 label samples submitted to NDMA use a type size of at least 6 points, with the average print size being 6.85 and the median being 7, the association recently reported. Voluntary industry guidelines for OTC label readability stipulate a minimum of 4.5. NDMA gave the update to comply with a 1990 California state law requiring the industry to report on measures being taken to improve labeling readability. California's Department of Health Services is preparing a report for the legislature, due out in December, that will discuss whether further labeling requirements are necessary.
