Executive Summary
Medicare and Medicaid comprised 35.3 percent of the retail prescription drug spending for 2013. Overall prescription drug spending climbed 2.5 percent in 2013, due in part to price increases for brand and specialty drugs, increased spending on new drugs, and increased utilization. This comes as the national health spending hits the lowest spending increase on record.
