SENATE SELECT COMMITTEE ON AGING's FUTURE UNCERTAIN in the wake of the Senate GOP committee reorganization. For the 104th Congress, the committee may be reduced in size, put under the jurisdiction of the Senate Finance Committee or eliminated outright. Since 1989, Sen. Pryor (D-Ark.) has used the select committee as a platform for investigations into the pharmaceutical industry, its drug pricing policies, R&D costs and reimbursement levels, as well as Medicare fraud affecting the elderly. In 1993, the House dropped its Select Committee on Aging, which had a similar mandate; Sen. Cochran (R-Miss.) has previously attacked the Senate committee, seeking to eliminate funding for it in February 1993.
