ANTIHISTAMINE TUMOR PROMOTION EPIDEMIOLOGY STUDIES UNDER CONSIDERATION by FDA as one response to the publication of mouse data showing that three prescription antihistamines -- Schering- Plough's Claritin (loratadine), Janssen's Hismanal (astemizole) and Pfizer's Atarax (hydroxyzine) -- stimulate the growth of tumors in mice. In a May 17 "Talk Paper," FDA said that it "is evaluating the feasibility of epidemiologic studies in patients with cancer." The mouse study was published May 18 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
