Executive Summary
Meharry Medical College President David Satcher, MD/PhD, has been appointed director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HHS Secretary Shalala announces Aug. 20. In a prepared statement, Satcher says he will begin his new job on a part-time basis in mid- to late-September and expects to be at CDC full-time "no later than January 1994." Satcher will succeed Acting Director Walter Dowdle who was appointed July 1 after William Roper stepped down. Satcher received his graduate degrees in cytogenetics from Case Western Reserve University in 1970.
