Oral contraceptives
Executive Summary
April 8 letter from FDA to companies requests all oral contraceptive labeling be changed within the next six months to include a statement that the product "is intended to prevent pregnancy" and "does not protect against HIV infection (AIDS) and other sexually transmitted disease." In addition, the statement is to be printed on contraceptive packaging with an expanded statement appearing in the patient package insert that lists types of STDs. Similar labeling will be required for Norplant, Depo Provera and IUDs.
