Senate Special Committee on Aging
Executive Summary
Senate on Feb. 24 defeats two amendments to the Senate Committee Funding Resolution that would have eliminated the committee. Proposed by Sens. Cochran (R-Miss.) and Reid (D-Nev.), the amendments were defeated by votes of 68-30 and 56-43. Committee Chairman Pryor (D-Ark.) said the Aging Committee "represents only 1.9% of all Senate committee budgets," and its elimination "would do nothing to help balance the budget or reduce the deficit" but would make the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association "the happiest group in town." New Jersey Democratic Sens. Bradley and Lautenberg voted for elimination; Sen. Hatch (R-Utah) opposed it.
