Food health claims

Executive Summary

FDA holds open comment period until Aug. 24 on three proposed rules regarding health claims for the following nutrient-disease relationships: antioxidant vitamins and cancer, dietary fiber and cardiovascular disease, and folic acid and neural tube defects. The rules, proposed Nov. 27, 1991, state that no basis exists to allow the use of health claims in the three areas. FDA has received several new studies on antioxidant vitamins and cancer, and dietary fiber and cardiovascular disease; new information on folic acid and neural tube defects will be provided during a July 27 Centers for Disease Control meeting on the issue.
