J&J will pay royalties from use of tretinoin against photoaging to University of Pennsylvania and its affiliate University Patents. A March 4 settlement concludes a suit filed by Penn in 1989 against J&J and Albert Kligman, the discoverer of tretinoin while at the university. J&J has an existing royalty agreement with Penn for use of the product in acne, the currently approved indication.
