Former Rep. Tauke turns down HHS post

Former Iowa Republican Rep. Tauke has turned down an offer of the HHS deputy secretary position. Tauke, who had been on the House Energy & Commerce Committee, has operated the Tauke, Walgren & Associates consulting firm since his failed Senate race last fall. He had meet twice with Secretary Sullivan about the number two post at HHS. Others who have met with Sullivan include former HHS Assistant Secretary for media relations Kay James, Heritage Foundation VP-Government Affairs Kay O'Beirne, and New York-based management consultant (and former Bush campaign aide) Gary McDougall. The deputy secretary slot will become available when Constance Horner moves to White House director of personnel.
