OTC ibuprofen with child resistant caps
Executive Summary
Consumer Product Safety Commission proposes safety closure regulation on June 24 following a unanimous vote by the commission. Reg is a "response to increasing numbers of poisonings to young children" through accidental ingestion of OTC ibuprofen. CPSC estimates approximately 29,000 accidental ingestions by children under five years of age were reported from the time ibuprofen went OTC in 1984 through 1989. Advil marketer Whitehall Labs responded June 26 with data from the American Association of Poison Control Center that show both acetaminophen and aspirin had higher levels of reported exposures and deaths in 1989. Since Advil was approved on May 18, 1984, Whitehall noted, the product has voluntarily complied with CPSC safety closure standards.
