Senate Labor & Human Resources Committee
Executive Summary
Gains Sen. Bingaman (D-N.M.) to fill the vacancy created by the recent death of Hawaiian Sen. Matsunage. Most of Bingaman's work in the health area has focused on health promotion/disease prevention bills, including measures to strengthen nutrition labeling, require FDA to regulate tobacco as a drug, encourage workplace wellness programs, and reduce alcohol advertising on college campuses. Bingaman retains his seats on the Armed Services, Energy and Natural Resources, and Governmental Affairs Committees, but will give up the chairmanship of the Governmental Affairs/Government Information and Regulation subcommittee.
