Ciba-Geigy's Ritalin
Executive Summary
Drug Enforcement Administration production limits on the Schedule II drug (methylphenidate) were reduced 14% for 1988, after five years in which production had increased from just over 1,100 to 1,800 kilograms per year, according to a Citizens Commission on Human Rights, which is seeking further reductions in the DEA ceiling. The organization, established by the Church of Scientology, was on Capitol Hill April 12 to protest federal funding tied to mental illness diagnoses of inattentive children. Such diagnoses in children have increased 1,000% over the past five years, the group contends, adding that many children inappropriately have received Ritalin and experienced adverse reactions.
