As a result, in the early 1990s we saw a kind of backlash against the bigger-is-better mentality, as suppliers regarded skeptically any group that had a membership too large to effectively manage, while rewarding (with better prices) those groups, particularly investor-owned hospital systems, that could mandate compliance.
